La Luna’s Roots and History
La Luna is the realization of a childhood dream and the culmination of years of hard work and passion in the Marquez and Luna family tradition. From the arresting scent of homemade flour tortillas, fresh beans, and spicy chile sauces that permeated the Marquez home, to the opening of Luna’s Texas Restaurant in 1952, these two families have carefully prepared and shared authentic recipes with friends and family for more than three generations. The people who knew them best would not be surprised that the proud heritage of these two families has continued, for the Marquez and Luna kitchens have always been the heartbeat of our homes with a place at the table for all.
The Dream is Born- Andrea’s story
As a young girl, I remember the wonderful aromas originating from the flavorful blends of fresh ingredients and spices as they simmered together to perfection on our stove. Initially, my interest was piqued by carefully and curiously observing my mother, Diana, but soon I was assisting her in the preparation of delectable meals for both great and small alike. As I grew, however, I learned just how much those who ate our fine food savored each morsel. I listened to them discuss their favorite items with eager anticipation and noted the immense satisfaction as I took up the last of their emptied plates. You see, I had discovered a secret about our food; it was not just a meal…it was an experience!
Since the age of nine, it has been a dream of mine to share the amazing flavors and freshness that marked my childhood with all who wish to enjoy that same cultural experience in their own home.
The Authentic Experience- Andrew’s story
In 1993 I began dating Andrea, and it was during a visit with her family that I first encountered what I have since begun to call “The Authentic Experience”. Unaccustomed to the rich tradition that defined Andrea’s family, my only experiences with Mexican food to that point had been limited to dry taco seasonings, canned beans, boxed rice, and whatever salsa jar grabbed my attention at the moment. Suddenly, here I was in the kitchen, gaining a deep appreciation for the fresh ingredients, for the patience necessary to get something just right, and for the culinary passion that was on display. It was clear to me that to keep such time-honored practices when it came to creating a meal could only mean one thing: that the food would be absolutely delicious. Turns out, I could not get enough!
Before too long, I began to participate in the experience, learning to hand-grind spices, to grate and crumble cheese, to dice onions, garlic, cilantro and plump red tomatoes. Eventually I would graduate to hand shaving the lettuce (no small feat mind you), but I had learned by keen observation and through the taste of the final product that no short cuts could be taken. I learned that passion for the food and for the people who would eventually eat it was in the details. I realized this was about more than just consumption; “The Authentic Experience” was about the invitation to learn, to participate, and to connect.
The Tradition Continues- Our story
Since being married in 2000, we have continued in our family’s tradition and joy for food and hospitality. Our kitchen remains an extension of love, warmth and connection within our home.
We believe there is something special that happens, in relationships, when people gather together to prepare and enjoy a wonderful meal. So, in 2007 we began this journey to share what our family has been doing for generations. As a celebration of the home, La Luna relishes the idea that your family and friends do not have to dine out to experience a traditional Mexican meal; instead, you can create the atmosphere and wonder of that very same meal while preparing it together in the comfort of your own home. Our family recipes are still made the way they have always been made—completely from scratch, and we invite you to share in an authentic experience centered on quality, freshness and convenience.
So, it is with great pride that we offer you wholesome food, rich in quality, history and passion.
Please enjoy!
